PhD. Subject: Strategies to design life-long learning heuristic based algorithms

Nowadays combinatorial optimization problems arise in many circumstances, and we need to be able to solve these problems e ciently. Unfortunately, many of these problems are proven to be NP-hard, but problems can be related in some way. Analysing di erent combinatorial problems we can see some similarities between them. If we work with this similarities, we could improve the search process of an algorithm, because there exists some concurrent knowledge about solving a problem that could be exploited. For example, if an algorithm can solve an instance X for Sudoku puzzle ensuring uniqueness in blocks before rows and colums, this strategy can be useful for another instance Y when the algorithm is in a local optimum. In other words, some heuristics that can nd interesting candidate solutions can be reused in future during the execution of an algorithm. To do this, an algorithm should learn over time to determine how, when and which heuristic apply. The idea of this investigation is to create strategies to design life-long learning heuristic based algorithms. There have been some investigations in this area applied to 1-D Bin Packing problem, for Traveling Sales Problem and the most important thing, is that can be applied in different kinds of problem.

From an empirical and historical approach, this research looks at the course of contemporarycon-tention in Mapuche territory. Drawing both upon secondary sources and first-hand testimonies of mobilized Mapuche communities in Arauco Province, this paper reveals innovations and significant continuities within the current cycle of contentious relations among the Chilean state, the Mapuche movement and the big forest capital. Paying particular attention to the socio-political context, this study analyzes the ongoing dynamic transformation, on one hand, of the suppression of Mapuche protests, and on the other hand, of the modalities of collective action itself and its discursive foundations. This paper addresses a new cycle of contention marked by the rise of violence, unrest, and the closure of institutional and political channels. The authors argue that the explicative sources of contention and its by-product violence mainly stems from the very interaction among the actors, the frames and repertories of the protest, and the institutional political scenario itself.

Consistency of WIMP Dark Matter as radiative neutrino mass messenger

The scotogenic scenario provides an attractive approach to both Dark Matter and neutrino mass generation, in which the same symmetry that stabilises Dark Matter also ensures the radiative seesaw origin of neutrino mass. However the simplest scenario may suffer from inconsistencies arising from the spontaneous breaking of the underlying Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 symmetry. Here we show that the singlet-triplet extension of the simplest model naturally avoids this problem due to the presence of scalar triplets neutral under the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 which affect the evolution of the couplings in the scalar sector. The scenario offers good prospects for direct WIMP Dark Matter detection through the nuclear recoil method.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    The octahedral manipulator revisited

Trabajo presentado al ICRA celebrado en Minnesota del 14 al 18 de mayo de 2012.In most practical implementations of the Gough-Stewart platform, the octahedral form is either taken as it stands or is approximated. The kinematics of this particular instance of the Gough-Stewart platform, commonly known as the octahedral manipulator, has been thoughtfully studied. It is well-known, for example, that its forward kinematics can be solved by computing the roots of an octic polynomial and its singularities have a simple geometric interpretation in terms of the intersection of four planes in a single point. In this paper, using a distance-based formulation, it is shown how these properties can be derived without relying neither on variable eliminations nor trigonometric substitutions. Moreover, thanks to this formulation, a family of platforms kinematically equivalent to the octahedral manipulator is obtained. Herein, two Gough-Stewart parallel platforms are said to be kinematically equivalent if there is a one-to-one correspondence between their squared leg lengths for the same configuration of their moving platforms with respect to their bases. If this condition is satisfied, it can be shown that both platforms have the same assembly modes and their singularities, in the configuration space of the moving platform, are located in the same place.Peer Reviewe
